Kraken for Canadian Crypto Traders

What happens to your trading plan when your exchange decides it doesn’t want you anymore?

In January 2026, a lot of Canadian traders found out. Bitget stopped accepting new Canadian accounts, shut off Interac and bank funding, and put existing users on reduce-only orders.

I recommended Bitget on this site for a long time. I was selected to be a local rep. but the exchange was not compliant and had to close down operations in Canada.

I’m not going to pretend I saw it coming. I didn’t.

But it taught me the same lesson the charts keep teaching me. Assume you are wrong, and protect yourself before the market proves it.

So here is where I trade now, and why. It’s Kraken.

Not because it’s flashy. Because it’s registered here, it takes Canadian dollars, and so I rebuilt my whole trading system to run on it.

Why Kraken works for Canadians

Kraken serves Canadians through Payward Canada Inc. It is a registered restricted dealer with the Ontario Securities Commission and the other provincial regulators, and a money services business with FINTRAC.

That matters more than any feature list. A registered exchange is one that already did the work to stay here.

Funding is simple too. Interac e-Transfer deposits are free and usually land within a day.

Here is what you can and cannot do as a Canadian on Kraken:

Canadians on Kraken
RegistrationRestricted dealer (OSC and provincial regulators), FINTRAC money services business
CAD depositsInterac e-Transfer, free
CAD withdrawalsInterac e-Transfer, $10 CAD each
e-Transfer limits$10,000 a day, $30,000 a week, $100,000 a month
Spot tradingYes
MarginNo
Futures and other derivativesNo
StakingSome assets only, ETH included
Coin listNarrower than the global list; some coins are not available to Canadians
API accessYes

No margin and no futures sounds like a downside. For most people, it’s a critical safety zone.

I’ve blown up accounts by breaking my own rules. Spot-only keeps the worst version of me away from the button.

One thing to check before you build a watchlist: not every coin is listed for Canadians. Our system looks up each coin on Kraken before we plan trades around it.

How my system uses Kraken

Why does an exchange choice matter so much to a mechanical trader?

Because a system only works if it can run the same way every day. Mine does.

The AltSeason CoPilot has been running our studies and daily action matrix for several years. The system tells us which of three states to hold.

  • USDT: cash, waiting it out
  • BTC: Bitcoin is the main position
  • Diversified alts: the rotation phase, small positions across many coins

Inside the alt state, every coin is measured against Bitcoin on its ALT/BTC daily chart. An entry needs three signals together: the EMA cross, a trendline break, and a break of Point 2 on the 1-2-3.

None of that is a prediction. It’s a status report, refreshed every day.

Kraken is where that status report now becomes an automated trade.

The new Mainspring Bitcoin connects a Google Sheet to your own Kraken account through the Kraken API.

The spreadsheet is on your google drive with no other connections. You create your private API keys, it uses can query and place orders while never exposing your keys. The system cannot withdraw. Your coins stay in your account, under your name.

That’s the whole point.

I built automation because my money should work for me while I’m doing something else. I want to be free from looking at the charts and still profit from my trading system. You might relate. Read my short story if you want to know what led me to where we are now.

Getting started

Here is the order I’d set it up in. It takes an evening, plus a day for verification.

  1. Open and verify your account. Canadians must verify. Use a Canadian phone number and your legal name.
  2. Match your names. Your bank account, your e-Transfer profile and your Kraken account need the same name, or the deposit bounces.
  3. Turn on two-factor security. Use an authenticator app, not text messages.
  4. Fund with a small e-Transfer first. Send an amount you would not miss, and watch it land before you send more.
  5. Decide your risk capital before you buy anything. If you haven’t worked through Part 3 of the free course, do that first. Risk control comes before the first trade.
  6. Check your coin list. Confirm each coin you plan to trade is available to Canadians.
  7. Add API access only if you automate. Create a key that can trade but cannot withdraw. Never turn on withdrawals for a trading key.

Compare other options on the exchanges page if Kraken doesn’t fit how you trade.

FAQ

Each answer opens with a full-sentence reply, so it can be quoted on its own. Mark this section up as FAQPage schema.

Is Kraken available in Canada? Yes. Kraken serves Canadians through Payward Canada Inc., a registered restricted dealer with the Ontario Securities Commission and the other provincial regulators, and a FINTRAC-registered money services business.

Can Canadians still use Bitget? Not for new accounts. Since January 2026, Bitget has not accepted new Canadian sign-ups, has shut off Interac and bank funding, and has limited existing Canadian accounts to closing positions.

How do I deposit Canadian dollars on Kraken? Use Interac e-Transfer. Deposits are free and usually arrive within a day; your bank account and e-Transfer names must match your Kraken account.

Can I trade margin or futures on Kraken in Canada? No. Canadian clients can trade spot crypto but cannot use margin or derivatives.

Can I automate trading on Kraken? Yes. Kraken offers API keys, and you can create one that places trades but cannot withdraw funds. Mainspring Bitcoin uses that kind of key with a Google Sheet.

Does the AltSeason CoPilot tell me which coins to buy? No. It reports signal states from EMA crossovers on daily charts. It does not predict prices or give investment advice.

Still here?

So ask yourself one question before you pick an exchange.

If this one changed its rules tomorrow, would your plan survive it?

If the answer is “I don’t know,” start with an exchange that is registered here, takes your dollars, and runs a system without you hovering over it.
